A wise investment

Just a few weeks ago, students at universities across PASSHE crossed the graduation stage to mark the completion of their higher education journey. Some were already well-established in their careers, and securing a credential provided a much-needed boost. Many more are just now taking their first steps into their careers and doing so in a job market that is in constant flux, driven by rapid technological advancements and changing workforce demands.

Those graduates know what we know: It is essential to embrace change to remain competitive in today’s economy. Adapting to new opportunities is crucial for ensuring long-term success.

Currently, more than 60% of jobs in Pennsylvania require education beyond high school, but only 53% of workers meet these qualifications. This notable gap presents a valuable opportunity for our graduates, and PASSHE universities are committed to supporting individuals on their educational journeys to help them fill that gap.

We know that a PASSHE higher education is a wise investment for students. It is affordable, aligns well with the job market, and leads to successful lives and careers. In fact, ten years after graduation, our alumni earn an average 62% more than high school graduates, regardless of their chosen academic discipline.

We know that PASSHE universities are a wise investment for the state. By aligning our academic programs with the state's workforce needs, we provide the talent that fosters economic growth. We’re preparing the next generation of leaders, thinkers, teachers, creators, and more, and we value the dedication of our elected leaders who have chosen to invest in our students and our universities because they know that investment is making a difference.

Supporting the success of our students, our communities, and our commonwealth — helping to navigate constant change — is why PASSHE universities exist. It’s why I do what I do, and why nearly 10,000 faculty and staff members across this system give of themselves every day.

As we start this new year, I know we can achieve remarkable things together. Here’s to a prosperous 2025!
